Rising star and solo cellist Tommy Mesa has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Cleveland Orchestra and Boston’s Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra among many other concert venues.
And now the young, accomplished Cuban American musician is coming to South Jersey to perform with the Bay Atlantic Symphony in its Breaking Away! Concert, the concluding concert of the Symphony’s 2023-2024 season, Sat, May 4 and Sun, May 5.
Mesa is featured in two cello solos beginning with contemporary composer Jessie Montgomery’s Cello Concerto – Divided followed by composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto, a three-part masterpiece of the Romantic era.
Last year Mesa won the Sphinx Organization’s Medal of Excellence. The social justice organization “dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts” awarded Mesa its highest honor. The group is focused on “increasing representation of Black and Latinx artists in classical music.”
Mesa is known for his dazzling stage presence and impressive musical skills. He performs on a Nicolò Gagliano cello made in 1767 and a bow made by Andre Richaume.
Mesa is one of the successful young soloists celebrated this season. He is an exceptional symphonic musician who is sure to delight Bay Atlantic Symphony concert goers. Single tickets are $35.
